Memory or Concentration Problems - what to do?
Understanding Memory and Confusion Problems: What You Need to Know
If you or a loved one is having trouble with memory, focus, or confusion, it's essential to know that you're not alone — and that help is available.
Sometimes, problems with memory or concentration are not just signs of getting older or tired. They may be a symptom of something more serious, such as a medical condition affecting the brain. At 14 Street Medical, we take these concerns seriously and are here to help find the cause.
Why Am I Having Trouble Remembering Things?
Memory or confusion problems can be caused by several underlying conditions, such as:
-
Cancer or tumors in the brain
-
Stroke or poor blood flow to the brain
-
Seizures or epilepsy
-
Cognitive disorders such as early dementia
-
Psychiatric conditions like depression or anxiety
We offer a complete medical workup to find out what's going on.
Step 1: Ruling Out Medical Problems
We perform several non-invasive tests to make sure there are no physical or neurological problems affecting your brain:
Brain MRI
Checks for tumors, strokes, or other changes in brain structure.
EEG (Electroencephalogram)
Looks at your brain’s electrical activity to detect seizures or epilepsy.
Carotid Doppler Ultrasound
Measures the blood flow to your brain. Poor circulation can cause confusion or memory loss.
Step 2: Evaluating for Cognitive or Psychiatric Causes
If the tests above are normal, your symptoms may be related to how your brain processes information. In that case, we’ll conduct:
Evoked Potential Test
This test checks how well your brain responds to stimuli and can show if you're having difficulty with memory or concentration.
If needed, we can refer you to a psychiatrist who can help manage cognitive symptoms with therapy or medication.
Why Early Testing Matters
The earlier we identify the cause of your symptoms, the sooner we can help you feel better. Many memory or concentration problems can be treated or managed once we understand what’s causing them.
At 14 Street Medical, all tests are done in one location — no outside referrals are needed, and there are no long wait times.
